Where do I find caregiver support?

An introduction to caregiver support services available through the Greater Nashville Regional Council

Where do I find caregiver support?

Caregivers play a vital role in keeping aging and disabled individuals in their homes and communities for as long as possible. While being a caregiver is a fulfilling role, it can also put strain on families both interpersonally and financially. The Greater Nashville Regional Council (GNRC) is designated by the Tennessee Commission on Aging and Disability (TCAD) as the Area Agency on Aging and Disability (AAAD). GNRC facilities the National Family Caregiver Support Program (NFCSP) on behalf of TCAD using federal funds authorized for the Older American Act Amendment of 2000.

Who is a caregiver?

There are several types of caregivers who are eligible for support, including:

  • Adult family members who provide informal care to individuals 60 years of age or older.
  • Adult family members who provide informal care to individuals of any age with Alzheimer’s disease or related disorders.
  • A caregiver 55 years of age or older who is providing care for an adult with disabilities.
  • A grandparent or relative 55 years of age or older providing care to a child under 18.

What caregiver support programs are available through GNRC?

The GNRC provides referrals, educational resources, and funding to support caregivers. Some of these resources include:

  • Connection to support groups and counseling services.
  • Education for those caring for someone with Alzheimer’s Disease, Dementia, or a related neurological condition.
  • Respite care to temporarily relieve caregivers from their responsibilities.
  • Supplemental services to complement a caregiver’s efforts.

How do I apply for caregiver support through the GNRC?

The first step is to call GNRC’s Information and Assistance Helpline: 615-255-1010

Eligibility for services and support may depend on additional criteria such as living arrangements, income level, diagnosis, and conditions. GNRC’s counselors will assess eligibility through an initial telephone conversation. Once eligibility is confirmed, you will be contacted by one of GNRC’s service coordinators when there is an opening in the program.
