How do I get an emergency alert system?
General information about emergency button devices and programs that may help you purchase one.
Seniors are particularly vulnerable to the short and long-term effects of medical emergencies, such as a fall or heart attacks, making emergency alert systems, also known as personal response systems (PERS), vital in keeping them in their homes for as long as possible. PERS also give family members peace of mind in knowing their aging loved ones can receive emergency medical care while living alone.
As the Area Agency on Aging and Disabilities (AAAD) for part of Middle Tennessee, the Greater Nashville Regional Council (GNRC) is here to provide information and assistance on acquiring resources, such as emergency buttons. For those that qualify, GNRC can even provide financial assistance for aging clients who need an emergency button.
What different types of PERS devices are there?
There is a wide variety of different types of PERS devices to match the needs of individuals. Many PERS devices can be worn around the neck or wrist and connects to console that transmits the alert to either a family member or directly to a 24/7 monitoring system.
Will Medicare cover PERS?
Currently, Medicare Part A and B do not cover the cost of PERS, as they are not deemed medically necessary. Some Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans can cover costs associated with PERS; however, this varies from plan to plan. It is best to consult with your insurance to see if your plan covers PERS.
Will TennCare cover PERS?
TennCare, Tennessee’s managed Medicaid, can cover some of the costs of PERS for individuals who qualify for the CHOICES program. TennCare CHOICES provides Long-Term Services and Support to adults with physical disabilities and seniors 65 or older, living both in nursing home facilities and in their own home, and who qualify for Medicaid and need nursing home level of care. To learn more, visit the Division of TennCare’s article on CHOICES, or visit our article “What is CHOICES and do I qualify for it?”

What if I don’t qualify for CHOICES?
OPTIONS in Community Living, OPTIONS for short, is the state-funded financial assistance program for seniors and disabled adults needing home and community-based services.
