What is Adult Day Care?

Frequently asked questions about Adult Day Care services.

Adult Day Care services provide supervised care, meals, exercise and social activities for older adults and adults with disabilities. Adult Day Care services allow caregivers some time away from their responsibilities, and peace of mind knowing their loved ones are receiving care from trained professionals.

Who is Adult Day Care for?

Adult Day Care services are designed for individuals that should not be left alone and need help  managing their day-to-day care, but do not require nursing home care. One example may be someone who can use the restroom independently and may need only a little assistance during meals, but who has trouble with remembering medications and other daily activities. Individuals who experience isolation, anxiety, or depression when alone can also benefit from Adult Day Care.

What kinds of activities do Adult Day Cares facilitate?

Adult Day Cares offer a variety of programs that promote overall health and socialization. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Physical exercise sessions like Tai Chi and balance training
  • Art and music based activities
  • Meals
  • Field trips
  • Exercises for cognitive health

How much does Adult Day Care cost?

Prices can vary from center to center depending on location, area of specialization, and what kind of financial assistance is available. Certain Adult Day Care facilities may offer sliding scale fees based on income.

The Greater Nashville Regional Council (GNRC) provides two types of funding to directly assist both formal and informal caregivers to keep seniors and adults with disabilities at home for as long as possible: the Voucher Program and the Take-a-Break Program. These programs can assist with the fees associated with Adult Day Care services. Learn more about these programs by visiting the "What kind of financial assistance is there for caregivers?" article.

TennCare, Tennessee’s Medicaid program, offers care coverage through CHOICES, Medicaid’s long-term services program. To qualify for CHOICES, individuals must need a level of care provided in a nursing home, as well as meeting income and assets limitations. To learn more visit the Division of TennCare article on CHOICES.

  • Are nutritious meals and snacks provided?
  • Is assistance with feeding, toileting, etc. available?

  • What is the staff to participant ratio? What are the credentials of the staff?
  • Is this facility licensed?
