What is the Area Agency on Aging and Disability (AAAD)?
General information about what the AAAD does, where it originated from, and how to find your local AAAD.
The Area Agency on Aging and Disability (AAAD) plays a vital role in addressing the needs of older adults and individuals with disabilities by providing resources, advocating for, and funding services that assist these vulnerable populations.
The Greater Nashville Regional Council (GNRC) is the AAAD for thirteen counties in Middle Tennessee, service area including Cheatham, Davidson, Dickson, Houston, Humphreys, Montgomery, Robertson, Rutherford, Stewart, Sumner, Trousdale, Williamson, and Wilson counties.
Where does the term AAAD come from?
The AAAD designation originates from the Older Americans Act (OAA), which was signed into law in 1965 as a response to the growing concerns about the well-being of older adults. The legislation recognized the need for a comprehensive system that could address the diverse needs of older Americans at the local level. As a result, the concept of Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) was introduced, providing a framework for the establishment of regional agencies to address the unique needs of older adults in their respective communities. Over time the understanding of disability-related issues expanded and the AAAs evolved to include services and support for individuals with disabilities. This led to the inclusion of "Disability" in the name, resulting in the current designation of the Area Agency on Aging and Disability (AAAD). Some states still use the AAA distinction, but area agencies in Tennessee are referred to as AAAD.
What does the AAAD do?
The primary objective of the AAAD is to enhance the lives of older adults and individuals with disabilities by offering a range of services and support. While specific functions may vary based on local priorities and available resources, the GNRC offers:
- Operating the Information and Assistance Hotline, which serves as a centralized source of information for individuals and their families seeking access to resources and programs available in their communities. They can help navigate the complex landscape of available services and connect individuals with appropriate support networks. To call the hotline, dial 615-255-1010 or 866-836-6678.
- Provide case management services to assess an individual's needs, develop care plans, and coordinate services across various providers. This helps ensure that the individual receives the necessary support to maintain their independence and well-being.
- Intake for TennCare CHOICES in Long-Term Services and Supports (CHOICES for short) is for individuals requiring, or at risk of requiring, a nursing home level of care and who qualify for Medicaid long-term services. Learn more at “What is CHOICES and do I qualify for it?”
- The GNRC funds a range of support services, through state and federal grants for services that are designed to address the unique challenges faced by older adults and individuals with disabilities, promoting their overall well-being. These programs include transportation assistance, meal programs, home modifications, personal care, caregiver support, legal aid, and respite care.
- Free and unbiased Medicare counseling through the TN SHIP program. Our trained counselors can answer questions about Medicare, including how and when to enroll, what the different Medicare plans cover, and tools to avoid being victimized by Medicare scams.
- Public guardianship for individuals assigned to the agency by the Circuit, Chancery and Probate Court. The program provides conservatorships to people who, due to physical or mental limitations, are unable to meet the essential requirements of their physical health or to manage essential aspects of their financial resources, and have no family member, friend, or corporation willing or able to act on their behalf.
