What Property Tax Relief is available for older and disabled Middle Tennesseans?
General information about the Property Tax Relief program for elderly and disabled Middle Tennesseans.
Tennessee state law allows for property tax relief for older adults and disabled homeowners, as well as for disabled veterans and their surviving spouses. This program is separate from the Property Tax Freeze program.
What is the Property Tax Relief program? Is it an exemption?
Tennessee’s property tax relief program does not exempt individuals from paying property taxes; those in the program are still required to pay their property taxes each year. For qualified applicants, the State of Tennessee will pay or reimburse a portion of your property taxes on your primary residence. The amount of relief received depends on an assessment of the property and the county or city tax rate.
How do I qualify for property tax relief?
To qualify for property tax relief, you must be at least one of the following: 65 or older, have a disability, be a veteran with a disability, or the widow(er) of a disabled veteran. Additionally, you must own your own home, located in Tennessee, and use it as your primary residence. Additional qualifications and income requirements are specific to each category of applicant. More information is available on the Property Tax Relief Program website, including interactive maps and statistics.
How do I apply for property tax relief?
You can get an application for property tax relief from your local county trustee’s office or at the city collecting officials’ office if your property is within a city’s limits. Find contact and office information for your county’s trustee here and city collections information here.
